About Wilkinsburg Affordable housing advocates
We are a group of individuals living and/or working in Wilkinsburg that care about ensuring affordable housing.
TOWARD A WORKING DEFINITION OF GENTRIFICATION
We find that the word “gentrification” is a loaded term that polarizes people as for or against development.
We seek development which will build off the strengths of the Wilkinsburg community as a vibrant, multi-cultural and multi-income community with multi-income homeownership, low income rentals, vacant homes restored and occupied, as well as the building of multi-racial, small and large businesses for local employment.
The development we oppose is the influx of businesses and developers from the outside that causes the displacement of current low-income renters, home-owners and businesses as rent, property values and taxes rise. Throughout America, this kind of development has displaced persons of color and moved them further away from city centers and access to services, while creating predominantly white and upscale neighborhoods.
